Working on behalf of a local transport firm who were proposing to construct a heavy goods vehicle testing centre, EMS undertook a contaminated land survey as required by the Herefordshire Council’s planning conditions.
The site investigation comprised of a phase one desk study investigation, including analysis of historical map information, environmental database information and a site walkover survey. The desk study revealed that the Herefordshire site comprised of former railway land which had also been previously occupied by a sawmill.
Both former land uses are potential sources of contamination so an intusive ground investigation was needed. We utilised machine excavated trial pits. Samples taken from the trial pits were analysed for a suite of contaminants based on the findings of the desk study and the Department of the Environment’s Industry profiles. The trial pits and contamination testing revealed soils at the site to be uncontaminated and EMS produced a report allowing development of the site to continue without the need for any remedial measures.
